Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. Do you wonder why flight attendants always give us the same instructions before take-off and landing? Some of them sound strange and seem to have no logic. Like, why do we need to open window shades or sit in darkness for flights at night? Pilots have their own window to look through, and they can’t even see if it’s dark or not in the passenger cabin. What gives? Take-off and landing are the most dangerous moments of the whole flight. Airplanes seldom crash in the air; the pilots can easily control the aircraft at a high altitude, or even in a turbulence zone. Most crashes actually occur when the plane is rising above the airport, or is touching back down on the runway. So all the instructions we follow have a good explanation. And that’s for our own security. Let’s see how it works. When the light around us rapidly changes from very bright to dark, it takes some time for us to get used to it. - The crew dims the light in the cabin on a nighttime flight so that the passengers’ eyes get used to the outside darkness. - Your eyes won’t need time to adjust to see the little floor lights that guide you to the exits. That’s why using your gadgets with a bright screen is also not allowed. - If everyone had gotten used to low light conditions before the accident happened, you'd see about 1,000 times better, compared to if you were suddenly plunged into the darkness. - Passengers should stay in their seats with seat belts fastened, the back of their seats in a vertical position, and tray tables locked. - In case of an emergency, this position is also safer for you and the passenger behind you, since the risk of trauma to the head and neck is much lower this way. - Pilots say that passengers are curious; they're perfect for an extra set of eyes to see if something goes wrong out there. A simple can of petroleum jelly will help you with that. - Magnetize a needle by rubbing it against a magnet, then put two pieces of floaty stuff you have on both sides of a needle. Let it float in the water and it will eventually stop in one direction. - Garlic, rosemary, mint or thyme – all of these herbs' smell will scare away all the pesky insects around. - Tie a scrolled piece of cloth around your leg and go through the high grass in the morning. It will collect dew that you can squeeze out into a bottle. - You'll need a 9-volt battery for that. Simply putting both contacts of this battery against a piece of steel wool leads to a small short circuit spark that spreads right away. - Turn the clay pot upside down and place it on top of the rod so that it hangs in the air. Place some candles around the rod and light them up. The heat from candles will get trapped under the pot. - You can use any source of natural fat instead of wax, and you can use a simple paper tissue or toilet paper to make a wick. - Put the end of the wire into the keyhole and bend it at a right angle, then pull it out a bit and bend in the other direction. Then stick it into the very edge of the keyhole following all the bends. - If you spotted a shark in the water, it doesn't mean that it's going to attack. If it passes by in the distance in a straight line, you have all the chances to calmly get away to the beach. - Move slowly and always leave an escape route for the bear. Try to make yourself look bigger than you are – spread your coat wide, stand on your tiptoes, but don't be aggressive. For example, Coca-Cola was surprisingly invented by John Pemberton, who had a medical degree and was a pharmacist. Almost immediately they bring disaster to their surrounding areas with hot lava and rockfall. As soon as that stops, smoke rises into the atmosphere, and ash starts falling to the ground. They haven't been slumbering to start with, so the magma at their core is hot and volatile. -Other volcanoes will have been sleeping for too long, and their stock of lava wasn't that huge to begin with, so they won't really make a blast. -Most volcanoes are underwater, so their eruptions will be very different. When a submerged volcano erupts, no one on the surface will even notice it if they're just a bit away. -There are only four supervolcanoes on the planet, the most famous being the Yellowstone supervolcano. -Almost immediately volcanoes bring disaster to their surrounding areas with hot lava and rockfall. As soon as that stops, smoke rises into the atmosphere, and ash starts falling to the ground. It blankets all surfaces, smothering grass, trees, and bushes, and they stop producing oxygen. -CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and after a while its high concentration in the atmosphere will warm up the planet again. Soon, the temperatures will rise to unbearable values, and it’ll be scalding hot until CO2 goes away at least in part. -About 95% of all living things are gone — it’s basically the same as what happened when a meteorite struck the planet in the era of dinosaurs. -When carbon dioxide dissipates and the temperature returns to more or less normal, plants will start appearing. -New and bigger species appear. They continue evolving and growing. At some point in the distant future, there appears the first species that learns to use tools. -Scientists point out there has never been an eruption of this kind on Earth, and there’s no indication it might happen in the future. Most of the time, cats come across as utterly indifferent. They don’t seem to care about other cats and aren’t too attached to their owners. But does this mean that cats are immoral, heartless creatures? Are cats, from a philosophical viewpoint, devoid of ethics and virtue? According to philosopher John Gray, author of the book Feline Philosophy, Cats and the Meaning of Life, cats have ethics and are also capable of love and affection. The book explains feline philosophy using John Gray’s interesting insights supplemented with theories and views by other philosophers like Arthur Schopenhauer, Michel de Montaigne, and Plato. Based on my interpretations of Gray’s ideas, this video explores what we can learn from cats. Since 1995, all public toilets must have this open seat. - Bacteria and viruses are tiny enough to easily soak in through the paper the covers are made of. - You can find toilet paper in different colors on the market. But most manufacturers bleach it to make it softer. - No one knows for sure, but some think that this name appeared back in the 16th century when Sir John Harrington invented Britain’s first flushing toilet. - In many homes, there’s a vent pipe that goes outside to the roof. When the wind blows hard above that pipe, the air pressure in it is lowered. - Most American toilets use a syphonic system, which forcibly draws toilet water down the drain.
