Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Exhale all the air from your lungs and hold your breath for as long as you can. When you can’t hold it any longer, breathe in powerfully and repeat. A simple can of petroleum jelly will help you with that. - Magnetize a needle by rubbing it against a magnet, then put two pieces of floaty stuff you have on both sides of a needle. Let it float in the water and it will eventually stop in one direction. - Garlic, rosemary, mint or thyme – all of these herbs' smell will scare away all the pesky insects around. - Tie a scrolled piece of cloth around your leg and go through the high grass in the morning. It will collect dew that you can squeeze out into a bottle. - You'll need a 9-volt battery for that. Simply putting both contacts of this battery against a piece of steel wool leads to a small short circuit spark that spreads right away. - Turn the clay pot upside down and place it on top of the rod so that it hangs in the air. Place some candles around the rod and light them up. The heat from candles will get trapped under the pot. - You can use any source of natural fat instead of wax, and you can use a simple paper tissue or toilet paper to make a wick. - Put the end of the wire into the keyhole and bend it at a right angle, then pull it out a bit and bend in the other direction. Then stick it into the very edge of the keyhole following all the bends. - If you spotted a shark in the water, it doesn't mean that it's going to attack. If it passes by in the distance in a straight line, you have all the chances to calmly get away to the beach. - Move slowly and always leave an escape route for the bear. Try to make yourself look bigger than you are – spread your coat wide, stand on your tiptoes, but don't be aggressive. Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. When the battery runs out, it’s nerve-racking, but unfortunately, it happens. The more functions our devices provide, the more power they need, and they’re hungrier than hungry hippos at this point! That’s why charging technology is all the rage now, and the new big thing is wireless charging. Even though we’re just now seeing this technology take off, the basics of how it works were discovered not long after we started to understand what electricity is. Near the end of the 19th century, engineering mastermind Nikola Tesla showed that two powerful magnetic fields can slightly transfer energy between their sources when they interfere with each other. This trick found its use more than a hundred years later! SUMMARY: - Every object with enough power is a potential source of an electromagnetic field. - Magnetism and electricity are two sides of one coin. When electricity flows, it creates an electromagnetic field. - To make a strong electromagnetic field with copper wire, you need a lot of it. Still, it’s one of the most fitting materials. - The biggest surprise here is that the technology behind wireless charging hasn’t drastically changed since Tesla. - The main problem engineers struggled with for a long time is that coils weren’t effective. The power of the field depends on the number of coils you can fit in the device. - Another problem is that electromagnetic fields need to be close to each other to keep a strong connection. - That’s why wireless chargers today come in the form of mats – you need to put your phone right on it to get any juice at all. - This new tech isn't huge yet because let’s face it – wires are still faster than an electromagnetic field. - Wireless charging takes around double the time to charge a smartphone from 0% to 100%. - There’s no way a short-range electromagnetic field can cause any harm to you. - As you can imagine, the whole method of electromagnetic charging won’t stay the same. As with anything, it’ll only get better in the upcoming years. - Resonance charging will be good for devices with a high level of power usage, like cars, laptops, or even some robots. - Another idea researchers are considering is laser charging. It may be extremely powerful and focused, but it has big bugs to work out first. - A laser will work on any distance but needs a clear line of sight to the device. If interrupted, it won't work at all. - Some other fresh research is aimed at the use of infrared light-waves, radio signals, or even ultrasound waves to charge phones and other devices. In space, inky darkness between blinding points of light does a great job. It hides black holes – gaping, hungry, and scary. Their blackness makes it really difficult for astronomers to find detailed information about these space monsters. There's a hypothetical type of black hole called primordial that could be filling the universe. As in, thousands of them crammed together in clusters the size of the distance between our Sun and the nearest star! Even more bizarre: these black holes could actually be the mysterious dark matter that's baffled scientists for decades! Astronomers know its exists and that it makes up 80% of the universe. But they can't find a single particle of the stuff. Maybe because the "stuff" was a black hole the entire time! Apparently, some of them had completely different uses when they first came out. And some foods were invented by accident! For example, Coca-Cola was surprisingly invented by John Pemberton, who had a medical degree and was a pharmacist. Pemberton's French Wine Coca was initially used as a remedy for severe pains, headache, and as a nerve tonic. According to popular legends, potato chips were invented by accident. One claims they were invented in 1853 by a chef at a luxurious New York restaurant. French fries were one of the specials at this restaurant and people seemed to love them. But there was one customer who wasn’t satisfied with the quality, complaining they were too thick. George deliberately made his next batch of fries paper-thin. These fries were so thin, it was impossible to eat them with cutlery. Surprisingly, the finicky eater loved the dish.
