Hot rods to aircooled 911s car designer Ian Callum's car collection - part 2 Welcome to The [Jonny Smith] Late Brake Show. This is part 2 of a candid chat with Jonny Smith's (aka CarPervert) friend ex Jaguar design boss. Whereas the first episode was more about Ian's life as a designer for Ford, Aston, Jaguar and other car makers, part 2 very much focuses on his eclectic car collection. What does the guy who helped design the Ford RS200, the Escort RS Cosworth, Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish actually drive? Quite a mix actually, and nearly always modified. Aside from the Porsche 914, Chevy C10 truck, Alfa Guilia GTV and Cal Look VW Beetle Karmann convertible Ian's car collection is almost never in one location. Before he takes Jonny out in his lighty resto-modded 1970s Jaguar XJC Coupe, the pair pore over Ian's Porsche 993 RSR homage, a low mileage Aston Vanquish S, a tuned Triumph TR6 (the classic he drives more than anything else), his long-time owned late 1990s Austin Rover Mini Cooper, and the prototype Callum Design R-Reforged 25 bespoke Aston Vanquish. The 1932 Ford 'deuce coupe' hot rod is his born-of-obsession project that he's rebuilt three times in 15 years. This was the car that he took to Jonny's wedding. As a hat tip to his previous employers he fitted the 32 Ford with Jaguar seats and a Ford racing V8 - the latter bought with staff discount! During the road drive in his XJC Ian talks more about his designs whilst at Jaguar - like the XK, F-Type, iPace, F-Pace, XF and his first all-new design for them, the XJ. There's also mention of awards from a sweary Prince Philip, Iron Maiden, doing the Mille Miglia with Jay Leno and Brian Johnson from AC/DC's loud car habit. Naturally. Stop. It is used for anything from dressmaking to machine embroidery and machine quilting, with the added bonus of a double length eye to allow Metallic Threads and thicker threads to pass through smoothly. This needle will easily take two or three threads at a time. We cannot recommend the Topstitch needle enough, it is the best needle by miles and the needle we always suggest you use if you are using metallic or thicker threads. The needle creates fewer skipped stitches. Use the needle for sewing with two or thicker threads as well as for decorative and topstitching work. Suitable fabrics - The Topstitch Needle can be used with a wide range of fabrics. The long eye makes it particularly suited for patchwork/quilting and anywhere where thick threads are used. Titanium-coated needles have been available for longarm and industrial machines for many years, but these are the first titanium-coated Topstitch style needles made for home machines. Superior Threads (USA) and Organ Needle Company (Japan) have applied the latest technology of titanium-coated needles to the Topstitch style for home machines. These new titanium-coated needles have an ultra thin coat of titanium nitride layered on the surface to extend their productive life by five to eight times that of conventional needles. Most professionals recommend changing the needle every project or, if you count, every 8 hours.Imagine having a needle that will last 40 to 60 hours.This is equivalent to saving 80% on the cost of needles. Another advantage and possibly the most important advantage is to do with prevention of thread breakages. Some machine embroiderers find that even when using high quality threads they experience the thread snapping or shredding. The usual advice given is to change the needleand usually it works. However, if you understand why you change the needle, the advice makes much more sense. Whilst in use a machine thread runs through the eye of the needle very fast, creating a groove which is unique to that thread. As each type of thread has its own unique weight and twist, when you change to a different type of thread the groove in the eye of the needle does not match the thread and trouble ensues. The best needles come in neat plastic boxes and if you stick a label across the box you can note which needle you used for which thread, keep a separate needle for each type (Not colour!) of thread that you use. Taking the extra few seconds to change to it a special needle will make life much easier!! Why mention it on a listing for titanium needles? Well the titanium coating is tough, so tough that it resists the thread as it runs through the needle and no groove is created in the eye.This means that you can put the needle into your machine for over 40 hours and just leave it there running any thread through it.This needle is sometimes known as the Magic needle, it really is a revolution in needle technology and I cannot recommend them enough.
