Picked up a 1989 Force 9.9 horsepower same as the Sears gamefisher that needed work, the motor would stall after it ran a little while. The person I bought it from tried everything gave up and sold it for $300. I check over entire engine and lower unit, water pump? Fuel pump for issues and it may have been the simplest thing! Here's a review of a Great Game of chess played between Robert Eugene Byrne and Bobby Fischer in 1963 in New York, USA. Rhys from Fishing Boats NZ walks us through one of the kitted out Surtees Boats 610 they have on the yard.
This is the first Surtees I’ve ever been in. The New Zealand built hull is made from plate aluminium and boasts a water ballast system that floods while at rest - offering extra weight for cutting through waves and pulling the hull down onto the chines while at rest. You can keep the water ballast in the chamber when you manually lock down the rear chamber door. We took the Game Fisher 650 model out for a run with Mark Golden from Brisbane’s Northside Marine. Mark’s a great advocate of these hulls - he sells them and loves both the build quality and the ride that these boats offer. Paired with a 150HP Yamaha 4-stroke outboard, it’s not just a good looking rig, it’s economical and practical as well. Let us take you through some of the features. “They don’t run any strakes or chines underneath the hull apart from the 50mm reverse chine right at the edge of the hull,” Mark said, “giving you a clean skin and a great ride. Also, the narrower hull gives it a really good ride while underway, but when you stop, the flooded keel takes in water and pulls the boat a little deeper in the water, giving you great stability.” Surtees has a manual system that can lock the ballast water in place, offering an even smoother ride while the boat is running and it seems as though the Surtees designer is a fan of keeping that water there while running. Mark was also happy to demonstrate the stability while at rest. While dropping a line and standing in the port rear corner, listing was imperceptible. Box ticked. Powered by Yamaha’s F150HP outboard, the 650 was quick onto the plane and delivered a top speed of 69km/h at 5,900rpm. At this pace, it yielded 1.1km/L, but this stretched out to 1.87km/L at a more moderate 3,500rpm. AT those cruising revs, the Game Fisher travelled at 34 km/h. Unfortunately, the calm day didn’t let us really test the 20° of transom deadrise built into this hull. The theory is that the steeper this angle, the more the hull will cut the water rather than pound down on it. Beautifully welded, the Surtees boasts a 5mm bottom sheet and 4mm side sheets, ensuring a durable and long lasting shell. Supplied on an Australian built, twin axle aluminium I-beam trailer, this boat falls into the zone of twin-cab ute or larger to really tow it effectively. The twin axles, initially a legal necessity, become a real advantage when towing longer distances to better fishing spots. They dampen some of the instability of a loaded single axle and provide a little peace-of-mind when it comes to dealing with any potential blowouts. “The Surtees is very easy to maintain. Most of the raw aluminium surfaces are coated with Nyalic, which helps to limit oxidation and keeps these surfaces looking brand new,” says Mark. This is handy, because the 650 boasts a huge cockpit area that primarily made up of unpainted, aluminium. This workspace can be easily maintained with a garden hose and you don’t need to be scared when the action becomes thick and fast and the bait and fish are flying. Northside Marine are proud to be able to package a local outboard and trailer with this imported hull and offer full warranties on all of the gear. I must admit, I’ve only ever been in one Surtees before. We tested the bigger brother of this rig - the 650 Game Fisher - couple of years ago in the same location. It was Clontarf in Moreton Bay, Queensland. That day was glassy calm, hot and sunny, which is perfect for fishing, yet frustrating when you want to see how the water ballast system that this brand is famous for, rides. Fast forward a couple of years and we have a forecast for a 20 knot northerly. This time in winter. Everyone knows a stinkin’ nor-wester sucks, so we could finally fill the ballast tanks and bust some chop. Day dawns glassy. Insert facepalm emoji. So if Surtees claim to actually flatten the sea instead of taking the edge off a rough ride, I’m all for that. Seems like it does to me. Regardless, we met the team from Northside Marine at the ramp, led by Bill Hull, their appropriately named head salesman. “We’ve been doing Surtees boats for 11 years now and from Day 1, we had sold the first shipment before it even landed and have never looked back. We’ve enjoyed this product immensely,” he said. But let’s backtrack a little. Surtees is a New Zealand built, plate aluminium hull that features a ‘water ballast system’. This means that at rest and with the ballast door open, it taken in over 300 litres of water. This drops the chines lower in the water and makes the hull more stable at rest by doing so. And although the water can drain out in just a few seconds after you power on, you can choose to retain the water in there to add mass to the boat and to have it ride like a heavier hull. And we all know that a heavy hull with a steep V will cut through chop better than a light, flat bottomed rig. That’s the theory anyway. FYI, it rode beautifully on the glassed-out bay. Like everything. That aside, the Surtees is a beautifully finished boat that’s fitted onto a locally built trailer. Northside then adds a locally sourced Yamaha and you’re ready to go. They’ll back the 10 year hull warranty 100%. The test rig was fitted with the maximum sized outboard - an F150 Yamaha 4-stroke that delivered a top speed on 70km/h at 5,900rpm while achieving 1.2km for each litre of fuel burned. The rig was most efficient at 3,500rpm where that economy jumped by around 50% and delivered 1.9km/L at 36km/h. With a 200L fuel tank, that’s well over 350km of theoretical range and appropriate for a hull that’s named a “Game Fisher”. The boat features an innovative bait station that has both inbuilt sliding trays and the ability to securely hold standard sized plastic tackle trays in easy reach. Under it, there’s dry storage space and isolation switches behind a cupboard door. Under that, there’s easy access to the batteries under a false floor. All of the deck is covered with EVA foam that looks the part and feels great underfoot. The cockpit also features wide gunwales with rod holders and shelves underneath to hold your gear that needs to be readily accessed. Moving forward, the helm seats are comfortable with storage options underneath. In the test boat’s case, these are a cooler box and some additional tackle storage. Surtees’ helm has evolved to a point that’s functional and capable of holding all of the electronics you’d be likely to fit your rig out with. The cabin isn’t the biggest in its class but does offer a balance between cockpit space and shelter. It’s separated with a zip-up canvas door and when locked in, the infill bunks complete an area to get away from the elements. Supplied on a twin axle trailer, this rig will tow easily with any dual cab ute. As tested, you’ll be looking at $115,687 with all of the options fitted, although BMT package prices start from around the $88,000 mark. Bobby Fischer was born on March 9, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. Fischer first learned the game of chess at age 6 and eventually became the youngest international grand master at the age of 15. In 1972, he became the first American-born world chess champion after defeating Boris Spassky. An eccentric genius, who was believed to have an I.Q. of 181, Fischer became known for his controversial public remarks in his later years. He was granted Icelandic citizenship in 2005, following legal trouble with the United States. He died on January 17, 2008. Early Life Robert James Fischer was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 9, 1943. Fischer's parents divorced when he was a toddler, and he began learning chess at the age of 6 after his older sister Joan bought him a chess set. He continued to hone his skills as a youngster at the Brooklyn Chess Club and Manhattan Chess Club. Fischer had a strained relationship with his mother, who supported his chess endeavors, but preferred that he pursue other areas of interest. A brilliant, highly competitive player who lost himself in the game, Fischer earned a place in the record books at age 14 when he became the youngest player to win the U.S. Chess Championship. Then in 1958, at 15, he became the youngest international grand master in history by winning the related tournament in Portoroz, Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). Match of the Century During the early 1960s, Fischer continued to be involved in U.S. and world championship matches, but was also making a name for himself with his erratic, paranoid commentary. After having a 20-game winning streak in the early 1970s, Fischer once again made chess history in 1972 with his defeat of the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky at the Reykjavik, Iceland world championships, thus marking the first time an American chess player had won the title. Fischer's defeat of a Soviet opponent, which became known as the "Match of the Century," took on iconic proportions in the midst of the Cold War and was seen as a symbolic victory of democracy over Communism.
