Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) recently launched flights to South Korea. I flew on SAUDIA B787 Dreamliner from Seoul Incheon to Jeddah via Riyadh. It is interesting for me to see who travels on this new SAUDIA flight as the country only recently opened to tourism and transit. During the flight, I reviewed all the SAUDIA in-flight service offerings including an onboard chef cooking fresh eggs for breakfast. SAUDIA is a no-alcohol airline, there is a dedicated prayer area on their widebody aircraft. The transit in Jeddah was easy. Finally, the airport is under one roof. During the transit, I visited the new SAUDIA Al Fursan Lounge. The lounge is the largest lounge in Skyteam airlines, which can accommodate up to 10,000 passengers a day. During each Hajj season, the airline carries over 100,000 passengers within a few weeks in and out of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I hope to document it in the next Hajj season.

In 2021, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman revealed the country's plans to build The Line, a smart linear city that will be constructed vertically, have no roads or cars and run purely on renewable energy. Now, the Saudi government has released image renders of what The Line could look like once it's done. The city was designed to only be 200 meters (656 feet) wide, but 500 meters (1,640 feet) tall and 170 kilometers (105 miles) long. It will house multiple communities encased in a glass facade running along the coast and will eventually be able to accommodate up to 9 million residents. The Line's designers envision a city wherein facilities are just a five-minute walk away from people and where residents can organically bump into each other as they go about their daily errands. While it will have no roads and won't be able to accommodate cars, it will have a high-speed rail for end-to-end transit that will take 20 minutes. It will also rely on a natural ventilation system to make sure residents enjoy the ideal climate all year round. The Line is part of Saudi's $500 billion Neom mega-city project being built in the country's Tabuk Province. It's a divisive initiative that's been beset with controversy from the time it started, because around 20,000 people will be forced to relocate by its construction. The controversies surrounding Neom had compelled Riot Games to quickly go back on its decision to enter a sponsorship agreement with the mega-city project. Neom was supposed to be a main partner for Riot's LEC esports championship in Europe two years ago until backlash from fans caused the company to end the sponsorship deal a mere 24 hours later. Ninguém sobreviveu! Num dos acidentes mais estranhos da aviação. Senta que lá vem história! Parte da tripulação e cerca de metade dos passageiros eram cidadãos sauditas, enquanto 85 passageiros eram do Paquistão e 32 do Irã. A maioria desses passageiros estava indo para Jeddah para participar do Hajj, porque Jeddah é a principal porta de entrada internacional dos viajantes para Meca. O Hajj é uma obrigação religiosa que diz que todos os muçulmanos têm de visitar a cidade sagrada de Meca pelo menos uma vez na vida, se tiverem condições. A experiência total no L-1011 (voo 163 Saudia) dos três membros da tripulação de voo foi de apenas 670 horas e todos os três eram pilotos abaixo da média, de acordo com seus registros de treinamento. Assim começou a receita de um desastre. Os anos 70 não foram fáceis para aviação ...estava armado o primeiro elo deste acidente. Às 21h08 do dia 19 de Agosto de 1980, o voo 163 Saudia, decolou de Riyadh e começou a subir em direção à altitude de cruzeiro. O piloto começou a assobiar e cantar, um hábito que ressurgirá repetidamente durante o voo. Não demorou muito para que as coisas começassem a dar errado. 7 minutos após a decolagem, um dos dois alarmes de incêndio no compartimento de carga traseiro C-3 disparou, alertando o engenheiro de voo da presença de um incêndio. Mas como o fogo foi detectado apenas pelo sistema B, o comandante parecia acreditar que a ativação de apenas um alarme de fumaça era insuficiente para desviar o voo. O segundo elo deste acidente se fechava. Somente 5 minutos e meio após a detecção de fumaça, os pilotos decidiram retornar ao aeroporto. Sabe o que é pior? Isso não era considerado excessivo na época, embora seja hoje. Mais um elo se fechava. This is a flight I took when leaving Saudi Arabia for Europe. Saudia use low density refurbished A320s on longer haul flights to Europe. These A320s have been refurbished with flatbed Business Class seats, seat back IFE in all classes and have Wi-Fi on-board.
