Android Image Loading *without* a Library - Common Interview Question

Most Android apps will use an image loading library like Glide or Picasso to fetch remote images and display them in an ImageView. A common interview question is to provide the same functionality without relying on these libraries. This tests being able to work with networking primitives (URL connection + input stream), and dealing with multiple threads (UI thread + background threads). ➤ Code we wrote: 🤍 ➤ Good explainer about handlers and threads: 🤍 ➤ This problem and solution are inspired from Codepath: 🤍 Hi! Code Palace Socials: YouTube: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 ⭐Join Discord: 🤍 How Glide Caching Mechanism works internally? Part of the Android Internals playlist. Glide cache is divided into memory cache and disk cache. The memory cache is composed of weak references + LruCache. When using Glide to load pictures, Glide compresses and converts the pictures according to the View by default, and does not display the original pictures The main function of memory cache is to prevent applications from repeatedly reading image data into memory. The main function of the disk cache is to prevent applications from repeatedly downloading and reading data from the network or other places. From the code that generates the key below, we can see that the way Glide generates the key is complicated. There are many parameters that determine the cache key, including the model, signature, width, height, transformations, resourceClass, transcodeClass, options We understand all the internal details of the Glide Caching Mechanism. Part 1 - Looks into fixing the slow & laggy scrolling inside the android image gallery application. For more info checkout - 🤍 Link below to that tutorial series 🤍 For those of you who have not done the android image gallery tutorial but are familiar enough with android you can clone the code from github here 🤍 In this part of the android tutorial performance series we look for a quick and fast solution by trying out a third party library called picasso. It's mainly a convenience library for downloading images from the internet but also has caching support which we will be looking to use to improve the performance of the recyclerview image gallery application. In this tutorial we will cover: - Installing third party libraries with gradle - Sync the android studio projects using gradle - Loading the image file into the image view using the picasso API's - Running the new code on the android device - Checking to see if there is any performance improvement The previous tutorials were aimed at beginners to android but over time have been getting more complex as the original camera_intent app has developed. This tutorial series is more aimed towards the intermediate developers but for those who have been following the previous tutorial series, feel free to watch this android performance series. Android studio (1.2.1) is the editor of choice (IDE) for this tutorial series. API's covered - Picasso load API This tutorial series is the start of what I expect to be many so I encourage comments and feedback to improve the quality and viewing experience.

If we just load in image from a url into an ImageView without further resizing, Picasso will load the full sized, high resolution image into the device's memory and scale it down to the ImageView's size. This leads to unnecessary memory consumption. In this video we will learn how to use the resize, resizeDimen and fit methods to resize the loaded image properly, how to keep the correct aspect ratio and how to crop and scale the image with centerCrop and centerInside. We will use pixel units, density independent pixels (dp/dips) and dimension resouces. In Episode 5 I build a first version of an image cache in CoreData, but I didn't like it. In this episode I rebuild the cache. It's a lot simpler now and easy to manage. Going Walkabout is a mobile travel blog. In this series you can follow me building the mobile travel diary app. You see me making functional and technical decisions while implementing the app. I start with an iPhone app and a web backend when required, an Android app is planned and will follow later. It’s a hobby project and I spend about a day a week on the development and a day a week on the filming of the progress. I appreciate your subscription, shares and likes #goingwalkabout #ios #firebase #traveldiary
