Ordinarily I would explain why I built a project first... but frankly, the answer this time is "just because I wanted to!" So this is how I built my homemade autonomous AND manually controlled airsoft sentry turret! This project was a great introductory project to the world of RaspberryPi for me personally. If you choose to replicate this project, there isn't all that much to it if you approach methodically, and I think it's actually more simple than many might realize! Additional instruction can be found on my website: 🤍. 0:00 - Controller Build 4:18 - Gameplay In this video I’m going to show you how I wired an Xbox controller to a stationary bike to create the ultimate workout controller. Let’s start this project by looking at the in-game bike controls. I need to press the A button to start pedaling the bike. Tapping the A button repeatedly pedals faster in game, so I’ll need to have a way to track how fast I’m pedaling on the bike. Pressing the left trigger causes your character to bike in reverse, so the bike also needs to track which direction you are pedaling. That gives me some basic ideas, so now let’s take a look at the hardware I plan to use for this project. First off, I’ll be using this third-party Xbox controller because there’s no need to be using an expensive official controller for this. As always, the brains of this project will be the Arduino micro. It will act as the middleman that will read sensor data from the bike and send inputs to the controller. The final piece to this puzzle are these magnetic switches. They act the same as a regular button press, but instead of being physically operated, they are controlled by magnetic fields. The switch on the left contains two wires with a strip of metal between them. The part in my right hand contains a magnet. When the two components come near each other, the magnet field closes the contacts in the switch and completes the electrical circuit. My plan is to place switches on the bike frame and the magnet on the wheel. As the wheel spins, the switches will detect the presence of the magnet. I can use these button pulses to determine the speed and direction of the wheel. Step one is to take the controller apart and see what I’m working with. The method I’m using for this project is called pad hacking. This is where you solder wires directly to the pcb in order to control it. You can see small metal pads all across the board. These are used in the fabrication process for debugging. The You can see that several of them are labeled to indicate which button they correspond to. And over in the corner I see that this one is labeled as A. So I know if I solder a wire to it, I can control the A button. I’ll also add hot glue to secure the wire as these pads are brittle and can break off with minimal force. The triggers on the Xbox one analog input, so instead of a single button, they are controlled by a potentiometer. I don’t see anything labeled for the left trigger, so I need to take the controller apart further to find the pin. Potentiometers have 3 pins in total, one for power, ground, and output respectively. I need to use a multimeter to identify each pin. Turns out on this controller the middle pin is the output. So I’ll solder on another wire and glue it down. I need a way to access the wires outside of the controller, so it’s time to break out the drill and do a little modification to the shell. Now I just need to pull my wires through the hole and make sure that all the buttons are still pressable.

Here's my second NERF build. This one does not have an auto-pusher so it does not have select fire (yet). Because of the long plastic barrel, it can be difficult to keep the barrel straight and some darts get caught up as i'm shooting. I may try to fix this with a single metal barrel. EDIT: I have added a 19mm OD x 17mm ID x 50cm carbon fiber barrel through the entire gun. The gun has really made the blaster solid. I think this will help with the performance issues. I haven't been able to shoot it with the new barrel. I had a loose wire that shorted out and fried my Arduino (still waiting for a new one). I didn't know how to do this Arduino thing 8 months ago. Professionally, I have an electrical background which means I can install a plug in your wall or install a light in your bedroom. Maybe show you what those little buttons do on receptacles in the kitchen and bathroom. 8 months ago I didn't know much of anything about electronics. And then somebody introduced me to Arduino and its potential. I found this Wheelchair at Goodwill in February 2011 for 65 bucks with all intentions to convert it to some sort of Halloween prop. I was gonna make it wireless, (still am) throw a Zombie in the seat, and chase kids with it Halloween night. After lots of tinkering, it began transforming into something completely different. Mostly due to what friends and my brother handed me and said; "Hey, put THIS on your chair!. . . . " So it evolved. And is still evolving. That's why Arduino is so fun. Ideas change. Oh well. Eventually it'll be wireless, have video and sound feed. Who knows what I'll mount to this damn thing. Make one. Best "platform" you'll ever buy. 10 mile range and can carry 350 pounds. Make a remote control Golf club caddy. Why not? Oh yeah, I call it a W.B.I.C. Mark I. Stands for: "Why? Because I Can." . . . And the whole zombie thing? I'll get to that eventually. . .

The SURGE uses a gearbox-driven piston that is a typical design of gel blasters and airsoft. All the gears, piston, piston housing, and inner barrel are plastic. The motor is not a standard size that I could find. The motor is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Although this battery is not easily accessible, it uses a common connector, so it could be easily changed if it died completely. The circuit board charges the Li-ion battery through a USB C connector. Power to the motor is directly controlled by a micro switch. The battery dimensions are 46.5 x 21.3 x 11.7 mm. The connector appears to be a JST-PH2 which are 2mm pitch vs the commonly used in RC Hobby JST-XH which are 2.54mm pitch (0.1"). JST-PH2 connectors can be identified by the single straight guide on the front, vs the JST-XH connectors have 2 barb-shaped guides on the front. A battery like this with the JST-PH2 connectors is less common. Also most 500mah 2s Lipo batteries for RC seem to be ~55mm x 30mm x 14mm which is a little bit larger, and will be a tight squeeze or require some trimming of plastic between the PCB and motor to fit. That makes me wonder if the 500mah rating on the Gel Blaster battery is true. The size appears to be more similar to 400mah batteries. This is the closest battery I've found with the same size JST-PH2 (E-flite micro connector) connector. Dimensions: 48x29x11mm The wire looks shorter though, so not sure how well it will reach. I made a sight scope that can be mounted on the 20mm rail. Dynamic reticle is realized with the attitude detection unit. (The English translation may be wrong. Please go easy on me.)
