They're called Integrated Development Environments or IDEs. If you're trying to figure out which one you should use, then check out this episode. We're gonna talk about the Arduino Web Editor, the original Arduino IDE and the new Arduino IDE 2.0. By the end of this lesson, you'll have an idea of which one's gonna be the best fit for what you need to do. You know, when you're just getting into Arduino, there's a lot to learn. Because you know, there's hardware and there's also software. The software that you need to program in Arduino or an Arduino-compatible board is all free provided by Arduino. It's all open source software. And to get that software, you just go to the Arduino website and you click on the software tab. And when you're here, you're kind of greeted by a bunch of different options. And it might be like, "Hey, which one am I supposed to get? Just tell me, you know." So we're gonna talk about all three options: -Web Editor -Arduino IDE -Arduino IDE So let's go ahead and start talking about the original Arduino IDE version. It's simple to download, you just pick your operating system on the right-hand side, it'll start a download. You go through the installation steps and it'll open up. These are the most current stable versions, right here. Now, if you wanted to get a previous version, you can click here and you can get a bunch of the previous versions, or if you wanna get the absolute hot off the press, newest version of this IDE, then you can download it here. Now they're still maintaining the original Arduino IDE. So this is gonna be the most recent updated features and bug fixes of the original Arduino IDE. So the original Arduino IDE looks like this. Right here, it looks like a kind of a text editor. Now, if you've been into software development for awhile, this might look a little rinky-dink to you. There's really not a lot going on. Like, there's not buttons everywhere to have like 10 million preferences and, there's really not much like code highlighting or anything like that. There's no auto-complete. There's not a lot of anything. It's like very much just a trimmed down text editor. You know, you just put in your code and run it. You know, like one, two, three, four, there's like five buttons up here. So it's just a really simple editor. And it hasn't changed much, like the appearance of it hasn't changed much in a long time. And that is one of its biggest features, I think. That it's super simple. And I think that's one of its best features actually, is that it is super simple. Especially if you're new to programming, sometimes trying to figure out what an IDE can do and how it works, can get really confusing. After examining how stepper motors work and what the difference is between a “Bipolar” and “Unipolar” stepper is I will show you how three methods of controlling a stepper motor with an Arduino: 1 - A common 28YBJ-48 Unipolar Stepper with a ULN2003 driver board. These inexpensive stepper and driver combinations are very common and are available on eBay, Amazon, and probably in your local electronics store. I’ll show you two different ways to use these with two different Arduino libraries. 2 - A NEMA 17 Bipolar stepper motor with an L298N dual H-Bridge driver board. We’ve used the L298N driver board in another video to control a pair of brushed DC motors but it also makes a good driver for a bipolar stepper motor. 3 - The same NEMA 17 Bipolar stepper motor controlled by an A4988 stepper driver. This common driver board is used in many 3D printers and CNC machines and simplifies the control of one or several stepper motors with an Arduino. I’ll also discuss concepts like microstepping and I will show you how to understand some of the many parameters that are included on stepper motor specification sheets. Today we will work with the Arduino Pro Mini, a small yet powerful Arduino board. We will also build a simple battery-powered robot arm controller. It uses the ATMega328 processor chip, giving it all of the power of the Arduino Uno in a tiny package. It even has a couple of extra analog to digital converters and is available in both 3.3-volt and 5-volt models. Although it has been discontinued from the official Arduino store it is an open source design (originally built by SparkFun) and is readily available. One thing that the Pro Mini is lacking, however, is a USB port for programming and debugging. To resolve this you will need to use an FTDI adapter, a small board that allows you to connect a USB port to your Arduino Pro Mini. It’s a simple board to use but be careful of the hookup, as some Pro Minis (and some FTDI boards as well) have their connections reversed. I’ll show you how to hook up the FTDI board to both a 3.3-volt and 5-volt Pro Mini and how to program it using the Arduino IDE. We will also build a battery-powered robot arm controller for the MeArm, it can be extended to work with any servo motor based robotic arm. While I will be the first to admit that the design lacks a lot of features it does a good job of illustrating how to work with the 3.3-volt Pro Mini. Unlike the Arduino IDE, XOD uses a graphical user interface, which is available as both a desktop client (for Windows, Mac, and Linux) and as an online application. You assemble XOD programs by hooking up “nodes” on a working surface called a “patch”. It’s a lot easier than writing code and once you're done you just deploy everything to your Arduino. In this video, I will introduce you to XOD. I’ll show you the principles of XOD programming and how to obtain the XOD IDE for your computer. I’ll then take you through a couple of demonstrations to show you just how easy it is to program in XOD. In the first demonstration, you’ll learn how to work with XOD. Today I’m working with XOD, a graphical IDE that lets you program an Arduino without writing any code. In this video, I will be showing you a couple of new techniques with XOD. First, we will learn how to use multiple patches in our XOD projects. This will allow us to create our own custom nodes, a powerful technique that also makes our main patch a lot less cluttered. We will also learn how to use XOD libraries. Today we will see how to add a XOD library to our IDE. In order to make things more fun, I’ve decided that for this video and the XOD videos that will follow we will build a project - a XOD powered robot car! In this video, I’ll show you how to assemble the robot car. Our initial design will use an L298N H-Bridge motor controller and a 10mm RGB LED. As the series continues we’ll add more parts to give our robot more capabilities.
