Ten Second Review Citroen's C5 Aircross is, according to its maker, 'the most comfortable SUV on the market'. Quite a claim, given that this isn't a large, luxury crossover but is targeted at family buyers currently considering volume mid-sized models in this class like Nissan's Qashqai and SEAT's Ateca. This revised version gets a more assertive look and higher equipment levels, plus its smarter cabin is still one of the most spacious and flexible in the segment. Background The legendary Citroen 2CV had a reputation for being able to comfortably traverse a ploughed field. That apart though, this French brand can't call on much customer recognition when it comes to vehicles cable of functioning off the beaten track. That has to change, given the current European obsession with SUVs and the company is depending on its Aircross range of models to convince customers of its crossover credibility. The first signs in this regard have been promising for the Gallic maker. The little C3 Aircross, launched in Summer 2017, has sold well in the small supermini-derived SUV sector. This family hatch-based C5 Aircross, which arrived here in 2018, has proved to be equally important. Citroen claims that it brings 'a fresh level of overall comfort' to the segment and there's an efficient range of engines that includes a petrol plug-in Hybrid version. And facelift is the right word, with most of the changes dealing with the Aircross’s design rather than its engineering. For those playing spot the facelift that means a new ‘more assertive’ front bumper and headlight combo, some new ‘3D’ rear lights and a new design of 18in wheels. Inside you’ll find a larger and higher definition 10-inch infotainment system slotted into a redesigned centre console. In other words, it’s a fairly minor update. Is it enough to compete against the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Skoda Karoq to name but three? There’s only one way to find out… What about the oily bits? You won’t find any surprises here, with the same three engines powering the front wheels and no changes to the suspension, either. In other words, the C5 Aircross still puts passenger comfort over any notion of sportiness or handling prowess. So far so very Citroen, and all the better for it. Your cheapest engine choice is the familiar 1.2-litre Puretech turbo triple available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. Its 127bhp and 170Ib ft of torque sound meagre on paper, but a mid-10sec 0-62mph time is respectable enough and real-world performance is adequate in all but extreme situations. Nel 2022 si è aggiornata, poco fuori e molto dentro, per rimanere competitiva come è sempre stata. Look rinfrescato, quindi, e degli interni ridisegnati e al passo coi tempi. Noi l'abbiamo provata nella sua variante ibrida plug-in da 225 CV, la protagonista del nostro #PerchéComprarla. Concretezza e una buona dose di personalità. La Citroen C5 Aircross è comoda, si guida bene e si dimostra adatta sia alla città che ai viaggi lunghi, complice un funzionamento dell'assistenza alla guida naturale ed efficace. Con l’aggiornamento avremmo voluto un po’ di ergonomia generale in più: i comandi degli ADAS non sono facili da usare, il climatizzatore touch è scomodo durante la guida e Apple CarPlay e Android Auto sarebbero potuti essere wireless. La risoluzione della retrocamera è migliorabile e, infine, ci sono concorrenti che offrono più spazio per i passeggeri posteriori. Il 1.2 benzina manuale da 130 CV parte da poco meno di 29.000 euro. Il diesel 1.5, da 130 CV anche questo, costa di partenza poco più di 30.000 euro, e poi c’è la plug-in di questa prova che parte da poco più di 42.000 euro. Cinque gli allestimenti, tra i quali ballano 1.500 euro. Tra le rivali più agguerrite della Citroen C5 Aircross ci sono sicuramente la Peugeot 3008, sua stretta parente, oppure la Ford Kuga, SUV plug-in molto apprezzato ma disponibile anche full hybrid, così come del resto anche la Kia Sportage e la Hyundai Tucson. When the Citroën C5 Aircross came about, I was all for it. But things have changed for me and so I have to look at this car a little differently now. It's sad, but true. It is also far too expensive, especially when you consider its rivals and what they offer. I still love the quirkiness of it, I just wish it would fit our budgets a bit better.
