Educational video about the functions and usage of global server load balancing. More info about traditional and modern GSLB can be found here: 🤍 🤍 🤍
Load Balancing is a key concept in system design. One simple way would be hashing all requests and then sending them to the assigned server. The standard way to hash objects is to map them to a search space and then transfer the load to the mapped computer. A system using this policy is likely to suffer when new nodes are added or removed from it. One term you would hear in system design interviews is Fault Tolerance, in which case a machine crashes. And Scalability, in which devices must be added to process more requests. Another term used often is request allocation. This means assigning a request to a server. Load balancing is often tied with service discovery and global locks. The type of load we want to balance is that of sticky sessions. Looking to ace your next interview? NGINX is primarily used as a web server, a reverse proxy, and/or a load balancer. In this short video, we'll go over how you can take an existing NGINX reverse proxy setup and convert it to load balance traffic to multiple backend servers. NGINX does a great job of load balancing traffic, but that doesn't mean it needs to be complicated to configure and by the end of this video you should see that it isn't complicated at all. 💻 More software engineering videos 🤍 Load balancing is process of balancing incoming requests to multiple machines, processes or services. In this video we will explain two types of load balancers, layer 4 and layer 7. Chapters 0:00 Intro 6:00 L4 Load balancer 9:10 L4 Load Balancer Pros and Cons 16:18 Example L4 Load Balancer with HAPROXY 22:30 L7 Load Balancer 27:00 L7 Pros and Cons 31:00 Example L7 Load Balancer with HAPROXY 37:00 Summary Layer 4 (4/3) Take content forwards it based on basic rules, it knows ip and port and perhaps latency of the target service. Layer 4 - haproxy, NLB Pros - great for simple packet-level load balancing - Fast and efficient doesn’t look at the data - More secure as it cant really look at your packets. So if it was compromised no one can look - Uses NAT - One connection between client and server NATed Cons - Cant do smart load balancing based on the content, such as switch request based on requested media type - Cant do microservices with this type - Has to be sticky as it is a stateful protocol (all segments) Layer 7 (Nginx , haproxy) This type of proxy actually looks at the content and have more context, it knows you are visiting the /users resources so it may forward it to a different server. Essential and Great for microservices , it knows the content is video:image etc.. it can also cache.. we cant really do caching on layer 4 because we have no clue whats in the packets. But expensive because it has to decrypt and look and compute Layer 4 - haproxy, nlb - great for simple packet-level load balancing - fast and efficient doesn’t look at the data - More secure as it cant really look at your packets. So id it was compromised no one can look - Uses NAT - One connection between client and server NATed Layer 7 - examples nginx - Smart routing based on the url (microservices) flexible - Provide caching - Expensive need to decrypt - Secuirty, you have to share your certificate with the load balancers. Id compromised attacker has access to all your data. - Proxy creates multiple connection (client to proxy/proxy to server) Image thumbnails 🤍 Support me on PayPal 🤍 Become A Patron 🤍 Stay Awesome! Sites that become extremely popular have to deal with consistent increases in monthly traffic, which can slow down the experience for everyone involved. A well designed load balancer will efficiently distribute incoming network traffic across a group of backend servers. A load balancer acts as the “traffic cop” sitting in front of your servers and routing client requests across all servers capable of fulfilling those requests in a manner that maximizes speed and capacity utilization and ensures that no one server is overworked, which could degrade performance. If a single server goes down, the load balancer redirects traffic to the remaining online servers. When a new server is added to the server group, the load balancer automatically starts to send requests to it. Load balancing is everywhere, most often starts at the DNS level and can choose any server selection strategy based on the system design. In this video of code decode we have explained about load balancer Next level App link : 🤍 What are load balancers When we scale our applications, we have multiple instances of servers deployed. Now To evenly distribute the incoming requests among the healthy server is a big task. That task is done by Load balancers The load balancer's responsibility is to equally distribute each client's requests among the pool of available servers. In order to prevent overtaxing or crashing servers, load balancers carry out this function. Load balancing layer is the first point of contact within a data centre. If a service processes a few hundred or even a few thousand requests per second, a load balancer might not be necessary. Nevertheless, load balancers offer the following characteristics for handling an increase in client requests: Scalability: The application's or service's capacity can be effortlessly extended by additional servers. So scaling up or scaling down is transparent to end users thanks to load balancers. Availability: The system continues to function even if some servers have problems or go offline. Hiding server errors and failures is one of the tasks performed by load balancers. Performance: Requests can be forwarded by load balancers to servers that are under less demand, giving users faster response times. This enhances resource usage while simultaneously enhancing performance. Application of load balancers Generally, LBs sit between clients and servers. Requests go through to servers and back to clients via the load balancing layer. However, that isn’t the only point where load balancers are used. Consider a Microservice Architecture There will client - API gateway - MS1 - MS2 You can keep load balancer between client and API Gteway instance (multiple) Then between Gateway and MS1(multiple Instances) MS1 and MS2 (multiple) MS2 and MS1’s DB connections with DB servers () Don’t you think Load balancer is a SPOF? As a disaster recovery measure, load balancers are typically deployed in pairs. The entire service will cease to function if one load balancer fails Enterprises typically deploy clusters of load balancers that constantly monitor each other's health using heartbeat communication in order to maintain high availability. The backup LB can take over in the event of the primary LB failing. But, manual rerouting can also be done in an emergency if the cluster as a whole fails. Types Of load Balancers Types of Load balancers: Global Server Load Balancer Local load balancer When we need to load balancer the request within Same Data center - Use local Load balancer. While Global is used to distribute the Load request to server outside that Datacenter too. These Global LB are used if there is a Large network failure, Power Failure So if you have Your application - Geographically distributed then use This else Local LB will work lIke a charm. How Load Balancer Distributes Requests? Round-robin scheduling: With this approach, each request is sequentially forwarded to a different server in the pool. Weighted round-robin: It is preferable to employ a weighted round-robin algorithm when some servers are better equipped to handle client requests. Each node in a weighted round-robin algorithm is given a weight. Requests from clients are forwarded by LBs based on the node's weight. The number of tasks increases as the weight does. Least connections : Some customers can have a request that takes longer to fulfil. The same connection might also be used by some clients for additional queries. In that instance, we can utilise algorithms like least connections, where servers with less connections are given newer arriving requests. In such a case, LBs maintain a state of the quantity and mapping of existing connections. In my quest to make my services highly available I decided to use keepalived. keepalived is a framework for both load balancing and high availability that implements VRRP. This is a protocol that you see on some routers and has been implemented in keepalived. It creates a Virtual IP (or VIP, or floating IP) that acts as a gateway to route traffic to all participating hosts. This VIP that can provide a high availability setup and fail over to another host in the event that one is down. In this video, we'll set up and configure keepalived, we'll test our configuration to make sure it's working, and we'll also talk about some advanced use cases like load balancing. ★ Subscribe! 🤍 ★ I'm Live on Twitch 🤍 ★ Get Help in Our Discord Community! 🤍 ★ Subscribe to Techno Tim Talks! 🤍 ★ Documentation found here 🤍 ⚙ Gear Recommendations ⚙ ► 🤍 (Affiliate links may be included in this description.
