A head-worn camera is used to track the pose of the viewer relative to the display, and the display content is updated accordingly. This creates the illusion of a virtual space behind (and potentially in front of) the display via motion parallax. In a later iteration this effect was combined with stereo parallax for a more powerful simulation of depth (even when rotating the head). In a sense, this is the inverse of the set-up seen in 🤍

To create Augmented Reality, using a QR Code, a fast and high-quality tracking algorithm should be used. Existing open-source libraries, like OpenCV or ZBAR, that allows QR Code detection, loses tracking in difficult situations. For example, when movements are fast, partial overlap, distortion or view from the side. Using an optical flow algorithm can solve this problem. This video shows the results of using this algorithm. The example was built in Android Studio and run on Samsung S7. The next step is to build the project on the web. The first script when run will identify any hands seen in front of it through computer vision and then use machine learning to draw a hand framework over the top of any hands identified. The second script will output to the shell a statement on total finger count (both up and down) and specific details of each Finger on whether it is up or down. Third and fourth scripts are all about controlling hardware and software with your hands. The first uses a GlowBit Matrix 4x4. The amount of fingers you show will produce different colours on the matrix. The final script lets you control a VLC media player (play, pause, volume control) all through your fingertips. I did this using a webcam mounted on a laptop. Head tracking and Irrlicht frames are updated in real-time. There is considerable lag due to reverse exponential filtering but I need a better model and statistical filtering to make it much faster. An update may follow. :)

This is the course project of me and Yuxiang's for CS290IMixed and Augmented Reality at UCSB. The idea is inspired by Johnny Lee's head tracking video at 🤍 but instead of Wii Remote, we only require a webcamera. The player can interact with the virtual ball by "blowing" it, and from the camera image we are able to extract mouth points thanks to the awesome face tracker developed by Tadas Baltrusaitis(🤍 and detect the 'blow' action by checking the change of mouth shape.
