Findings released in the medical journal The Lancet indicate the omicron variant is much less likely to cause so-called long COVID-19 in vaccinated patients than the delta variant. Only about 5% of vaccinated COVID-19 patients infected with the omicron variant reported experiencing brain fog, heart problems, or other health issues a month after testing positive for the disease. Mild Omicron Covid Infection and the Risk of Long Covid Syndrome...

When Omicron surge started in our country, many of us already knew something about it due to the so called ”mild” symptoms from the experiences of other countries. But one urgent question I had was whether those who got the Omicron infection although mild or asymptomatic will eventually develop long covid syndrome symptoms. “Long COVID,” that exists after Covid infection is a cluster of debilitating symptoms that include fatigue, headache, pain and shortness of breath that can last for months after an initial infection. So the question is: If you got Omicron, even Mild…will you likely develop the symptoms of Long Covid Syndrome?

The omicron variant of the coronavirus has upended plans to put the pandemic behind us. Instead, average daily U.S. COVID infections are up 80 percent in two weeks. Hospitals are hunkering down, and the White House is scrambling to respond. Here’s what we know about COVID-19’s impact on the brain

15.04.2022

When COVID-19 first emerged, many researchers were focused on its impact on the lungs. But others, including Avindra Nath, Clinical Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, suspected COVID could also have a profound impact on the brain. Brain autopsy data from those who have died of COVID-19 have confirmed these early suspicions, revealing damaged blood vessels and inflammatory cells. Less is known about the direct impact on the brains of people with persisting symptoms weeks after an initial infection, a condition known as Long COVID. What at first seemed like a laundry list of neurological symptoms has now been focused into major categories, says Serena Spudich, a neurologist at Yale University. Watch to learn how researchers and doctors have been teasing apart how COVID impacts the brain, and testing treatments to alleviate symptoms.

What are the early symptoms of Omicron variant of COVID-19? Here's what one doctor has seen

Dr. David Winter at Baylor, Scott & White in Dallas said some early symptoms of Omicron variant are different than other variants of COVID-19. The ultra-contagious omicron mutant is pushing cases to all-time highs and causing chaos as an exhausted world struggles, again, to stem the spread. But this time, we're not starting from scratch. Vaccines offer strong protection from serious illness, even if they don't always prevent a mild infection. Omicron doesn't appear to be as deadly as some earlier variants. And those who survive it will have some refreshed protection against other forms of the virus that still are circulating — and maybe the next mutant to emerge, too. MORE: 🤍

Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast: BA.5 omicron variant fueling latest COVID-19 surge

The BA.5 omicron variant is now the dominant strain in the U.S., and it is leading to a new wave of COVID-19 infections. BA.5 was responsible for nearly 54% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., and BA.4, a similar variant, accounted for another 17%, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Experts are concerned because this particular variant appears to be good at evading the immune system. "This BA.5 variant is hypercontagious, and right behind it, new variants are coming," says Dr. Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert and head of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. "We will continue to generate these variants until people are masked and immunized." Dr. Poland explains that the transmissibility of BA.5 represents the evolution of the virus to become more contagious and able to evade immune protection from previous infection or vaccination. "Whether you've been vaccinated, whether you've been previously infected, whether you've been previously infected and vaccinated, you have very little protection against BA.5 in terms of getting infected or having mild to moderate infection," says Dr. Poland. "Thankfully, you still do have good protection against dying, being hospitalized or ending up on a ventilator if you are up to date on your vaccinations." Due to the consequences of reinfection, including the possibility of long COVID-19, Dr. Poland urges people to continue to take precautions to protect themselves. "The reality is, it's important to be up to date on the COVID-19 vaccinations that are recommended for your age group, health condition, etc.," says Dr. Poland. "Sometime this fall, we may well have a variant-focused vaccine, so get it when it becomes available. And wear a proper mask properly when you are indoors around people who are not your family or in a crowded outdoor venue." On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Poland shares the latest COVID-19 news and answers listener questions. _ For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was either recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in a nonpatient-care area where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed. Information in this post was accurate at the time of its posting. As Canada's COVID-19 cases see a decline, the nation's top doctor Dr. Theresa Tam says the country is through the worst of the Omicron wave. Since its surge began late last year, the highly-contagious variant of COVID-19 has infected more Canadians than any other version of the virus. But now a new study from Denmark looks at whether you can be reinfected with the same variant multiple times. Jamie Mauracher breaks down the new data, and what it means for those vaccinated against the virus. Omicron - Incubation And Contagious Period (Vaccinated, Unvaccinated, Previously Infected)

Omicron continues to spread and we are starting to learn more and more about how this variant differs from previous variants. In this video we discuss the incubation period of the virus, or how long after you are exposed do you typically develop symptoms. We discuss how this differs from previous variants with some theories as to why. We also talk about how long you may be contagious and touch on the new CDC guidelines. The median incubation period for Omicron seems to around 3 days per the more recent data out of Norway, Nebraska, and the UK. With this being said, 0-8 days has been reported, so we cannot completely count on the 3 day number. This seems to be similar in vaccinated, unvaccinated, and previously infected although the data on unvaccinated is limited. 🤍 🤍 This faster incubation period and increased transmission may be because Omicron seems to replicate much much faster in the upper airways than Delta does. 🤍 🤍 The CDC shortened their quarantine period to 5 days with another 5 days masked in public. This seems to be an attempt to get people back to work more quickly, rather than a statement that you are only contagious for 5 days. Data suggests you are most contagious 1-2 days before symptoms and 2-3 days after symptoms, but may extend beyond this. 🤍 Learn more about Omicron in the videos below!
