Firefighters in Spain struggled to contain wildfires on Sunday amid an unusual heat wave in Western Europe for this time of year. The worst damage in Spain has been in the northwest province of Zamora, where over 25,000 hectares of land have been consumed, according to regional authorities. “We left with the fire right by our side. I was desperate. We didn’t know anything,” 36-year-old resident Javier Vara said. Spanish authorities said that after three days of high temperatures, punishing winds and low humidity, some respite came with dropping temperatures on Sunday morning. Authorities warned there was still a danger that an unfavourable shift in weather could revive the blaze that caused the evacuation of 18 villages. Wildfires are destroying huge swathes of territory around Europe. Finland has been battling its biggest forest fire in half a century. Heatwaves are also causing havoc further south. The worst blazes are raging in southern Turkey, where six people have been killed. Greece has also been hard-hit. The smoke in Greece is becoming a hazard. So much so that hospitals are now admitting patients with breathing difficulties. Greek authorities had warned that wildfires could erupt in temperatures reaching 45 degrees. In Greece and elsewhere, scientists are linking the heatwave and the wildfires to climate change. In Italy, firefighters have been working day and night to douse the flames. On the island of Sicily, the fires in the mountains are also threatening seaside resorts - 150 tourists were moved out. In Turkey, hundreds more holidaymakers were ferried to safety after the forest fires got too close to their hotels. Coastguards asked boat owners to help with the rescue operation . Inland, farmers are helpless as their animals perish. Dozens of villages have been evacuated. President Erdogan has been quick to point the finger at his political opponents. Turkish authorities say they have brought most of the fires under control - but the hot weather is expected to continue for the next few days. Forest fires fueled by a protracted heat wave continued to rage on Thursday from Italy to Turkey and through the Balkans. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said July was the second-hottest on record in Europe. The heat wave has continued through August to ignite wildfires. Major fires broke out in Greece and Turkey amidst the worst heatwave in years. Neighboring countries are also facing similar crises. An EU disaster response group said firefighters and water-dropping planes were being sent from the bloc's members to Italy, Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, where the government declared a 30-day state of emergency. For more than a week, Greece has battled a heatwave that authorities describe as the country’s worse since 1987, with temperatures spiraling to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit). The heatwave is forecast to last until at least Sunday. Scientists have no doubt that climate change is the key driver of yet another extreme fire season. They also understand that climate adaptation in fire-prone countries is inadequate to deal with wildfires that are set to worsen. European firefighters arrive in Athens to help Greece with potential summer wildfires

The first of multiple European firefighter teams began operations in Athens on Saturday, as part of a move by the European Union (EU) to pre-emptively station firefighters in Greece to be prepared for any summer blazes. A cohort of 28 firefighters from Romania with eight vehicles, as well as 16 firefighters from Bulgaria with four vehicles, were the first to arrive for the 60-day mission. The Romanians will be stationed in Athens, while the Bulgarian firefighters will be in Larissa of central Greece. Greece's Civil Protection and Climate Crisis Minister Christos Stylianides thanked the firefighters for coming during a “difficult” summer and showing that European solidarity “is not just theoretical.” More than 200 firefighters and equipment from Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Romania and Norway will be stationed in Greece to provide immediate support for wildfires. The assistance, financed and co-ordinated under the EU's civil protection mechanism, will come on top of firefighting aircraft available to EU countries under the bloc's reserve of resources. Greece is on alert this year after the country was wracked by several blazes on multiple fronts last year that raged for weeks, burning down homes and hundreds of thousands of acres of forest following the worst heatwave in decades. Wildfires and heat waves: will Europe's forests survive?

Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees: 🤍 *Correction to one claim in the script* In the video, we claim that the study we quote on two occasions comes from 'Nature Magazine'. The study was actually published in ‘Scientific Report’ magazine. The latter belongs to the publishing house 'Nature Research' and is not related to 'Natura Magazine'. *Clarification of one claim in the script* The figure of “97%” named in the video (in minute 00:38) is not a quote from the above mentioned study. It refers to 97% of Germany’s forests being intensively harvested forests, which, as claimed by our interview partners in the video, are not well equipped to adapt to a changing, heating climate. Most of Europe’s forests are not ready for a heating planet and whether they survive yet another heat wave in 2020 remains to be seen. Already two consecutive heat waves in 2018 and 2019 threatened the survival of forests and the fertility of arable land across Europe. Western and Central Europe were especially affected, as its vegetation is adapted to milder climatic conditions. According to a study in Nature magazine the severe summer drought in 2018 and 2019 put European forests under serious threat. The consequences of those droughts are now becoming fully apparent. While a similarly severe drought a decade earlier saw vegetation quickly recover, this time European forests are not recovering fast enough, negatively affecting the fertility of Europe’s soils and wildlife. But if one looks closer, it becomes clear that the type of forests dying as a consequence of those heat waves are mostly non-native tree plantations. Natural forests are still holding up. But this too could change if a European forest industry that is primarily timber-oriented, doesn’t quickly embrace a more natural approach to forest management. For the past 20 years Lutz Fähser has been proving that change is possible. In the Lübeck Forest in Germany he hopes to prove how forests can provide us with wood and paper, while we still treat them as what they are: a living ecosystem. The Italian island of Sicily may have just smashed continental Europe’s heat record, the latest example of how climate change is causing extreme weather events around the globe. Temperatures there reached 48.8 degrees Celsius (119.8 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday, Sicily’s weather service said. That if officially verified would top the record of 48 degrees set in Athens in 1977, according to World Meteorological Organization data posted by Arizona State University. The blistering heat adds to unusual weather seen across Europe: Nearby Turkey is battling its worst ever wildfires, parts of Germany were inundated by severe flooding recently and the U.K. is seeing more intense storms. Extreme conditions have also occurred elsewhere this year from deep freezes in Texas that crippled the power system to crop-damaging frosts in Brazil. Wildfires Burn in Croatia and Montenegro Amid Southern Europe Heat Wave

Firefighters tackled wildfires in Croatia and Montenegro as southern Europe continued to swelter under another heatwave on Thursday. In Vrpolje, eastern Croatia, planes dumped water on a hilltop blaze, while in the forests near Pljevlja, northern Montenegro, firefighters used fire trucks to dampen hotspots in a woodland area a fire had decimated. The fires in Croatia and Montenegro have been small so far, authorities have warned however of the extreme danger of more incidents. Croatian authorities said temperatures reached 39 degrees Celsius (102 F) at the Adriatic Sea coast on Wednesday. The surge in temperatures is due to a mass of hot, dry air from Africa. While southern Europe is known for sunny, hot summers, climate scientists say there's little doubt climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas is driving extreme events such as heat waves, droughts and wildfires, which they say are likely to happen more frequently as the Earth warms. Five water-dropping planes and five helicopters tried on Tuesday evening to control the flames of a wildfire spreading north of Athens. Hundreds of residents living near a forest area north of the Greek capital fled their homes as the wildfire reached residential areas during on of Greece' worst heatwave in decades. The initial blaze began near the former royal summer residence in Tatoi around midday on Tuesday, but has now spread to Ano Varymbombi, near several horse-riding centres, and to an area just outside the residential settlement of Adames, prompting its evacuation and the closure of a section of the national highway nearby. As the heatwave scorching the eastern Mediterranean intensified, temperatures reached 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) in parts of the Greek capital. The blaze damaged electricity pylons, adding further strain on the electricity network already under pressure due to widespread use of air-conditioning. The extreme weather has fueled deadly wildfires in Turkey and blazes in Greece, Albania, Italy and across the region. Neighbouring Greece was also fighting fires on multiple fronts today, with a blaze in the Peloponnese region - to the west of Athens - burning out of control, with Rhodes island in the Aegean also suffering. Multiple blazes were also burning in Italy following fires that hit Sicily and Pescara at the weekend, forcing hundreds to evacuate. Extreme fire risk warnings have also been issued for much of the south of France, with people told to avoid wooded areas in an attempt to avoid disaster. The fires are being driven by hot, dry and windy conditions that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned will get worse this week as temperatures push 113F (45C) in what would be his country's worst heatwave since 1987. A record heatwave is fueling devastating wildfires across much of the southern Mediterranean and eastern Europe. Hundreds of blazes have broken out – many of them multiplying in recent days. Italy, Croatia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Ukraine are tackling dozens of wildfires. Scientists have linked them largely to the intense heat - which they say is made more likely and more severe by global warming. Greece's Prime Minister says the country is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. The fires have wiped out swaths of forests, destroyed infrastructure – and even threatened Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic games.
